:: In Memorium::

:: As the evening closes, let's take a moment to remember all of the lives lost and families destroyed on this day nine years ago, including the 44 victims aboard United Airlines flight 93 that found its final resting place in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Let's put politics aside and honor the amazing courage exhibited by the victims and emergency response team with all of the sensitivity and humanity that is due. It is only by God's grace that we live and breathe! ::

September 11, 2010: 10th Annual Laura Sims Skate House Health Fair

My dreams of becoming an Olympic Skater were reborn!!

My new friend and I, Ms. Capers!

Siblings, Mr. and Ms. Sims (of the Laura Sims Skate Rink)

City Council representative, Jim Roebuk

The Laura Sims Skate House in West Philadelphia served as the venue for the Health and Safety Community Fair. Community members were treated to health screenings, information exhibits, healthy snacks, chair massages (if only I had the time to indulge), nutritious food demonstrations, give-aways and inspirational words as they perused the floor of the roller rink.

The Sims rink has a rich history in the West Philadelphia community, providing family friendly entertainment, instructional courses and excercise to young and old alike! As a part of my "Meet and Greet" session I had an opportunity to address the audience with the two areas I find most pressing education and health care. I had a beautiful experience with the Skate House family and I look forward to starting my Winter olympics training on the ice rink this winter ;)

July 14, 2010: Project Forward Leap!

Project Forward Leap (PFL) is an intense multiple year academic program for students grades 5-12 that helps to create high standards and good habits that will prepare them for life after high school. PFL is committed to "closing the gaps of academic achievement by providing challenging and equal educational opportunities to students whose achievement of academic potential is put at serious risk by socio-economic disadvantages." As I learned about PFL I became increasingly impressed with their approach to academic success. The program coordinators understood that the students need year-round support, thus they organize tutoring and weekend programs throughout the school year. With this approach they have achieved a 95% high school graduation rate and an 85% college matriculation rate!! (Most of the urban areas served have about a 50% high school graduation rate.)

During our afternoon together, the PFL students and I (aka my 99 new bff's) discussed career goals, the importance of perseverance, the benefits of hardwork and most importantly how to have a holiday named in your honor (wink, wink).
To my new friends: Thank you for spending the afternoon with me :) I love your enthusiasm and I am soooo proud of each one of you. I expect GREAT things and I look forward to watching as each of you fulfill your life "platforms"!

We were having tooooo much fun! -LOL

This was supposed to be our "serious" shot--I failed hahahaha!
These were a few of the guests joining us at the original American Bandstand Studios for the Tribute to Legends Gala. A plethora of old school and new school artists paid tribute to georgie Woods, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, the Temptations, the Spinners, The Blue Notes, Four Tops and the Intruders!
This event provided an opportunity to not only support local artists, but to stop and appreciate the role that music has had in the African American Culture, from the strength of Negro spirituals to the smooth rhythms of modern R &B.We had an absolute blast and it was exciting to share a stage with so many legends!
