The Laura Sims Skate House in West Philadelphia served as the venue for the Health and Safety Community Fair. Community members were treated to health screenings, information exhibits, healthy snacks, chair massages (if only I had the time to indulge), nutritious food demonstrations, give-aways and inspirational words as they perused the floor of the roller rink.

The Sims rink has a rich history in the West Philadelphia community, providing family friendly entertainment, instructional courses and excercise to young and old alike! As a part of my "Meet and Greet" session I had an opportunity to address the audience with the two areas I find most pressing education and health care. I had a beautiful experience with the Skate House family and I look forward to starting my Winter olympics training on the ice rink this winter ;)

God truly revealed himself throughout the "pageant process" and it was an incredible experience of growth and perseverence! I met some phenomenal women who are changing the world--as we speak-- and I cant wait to see them all at the top!

July 14, 2010: Project Forward Leap!

Project Forward Leap (PFL) is an intense multiple year academic program for students grades 5-12 that helps to create high standards and good habits that will prepare them for life after high school. PFL is committed to "closing the gaps of academic achievement by providing challenging and equal educational opportunities to students whose achievement of academic potential is put at serious risk by socio-economic disadvantages." As I learned about PFL I became increasingly impressed with their approach to academic success. The program coordinators understood that the students need year-round support, thus they organize tutoring and weekend programs throughout the school year. With this approach they have achieved a 95% high school graduation rate and an 85% college matriculation rate!! (Most of the urban areas served have about a 50% high school graduation rate.)

During our afternoon together, the PFL students and I (aka my 99 new bff's) discussed career goals, the importance of perseverance, the benefits of hardwork and most importantly how to have a holiday named in your honor (wink, wink).

To my new friends: Thank you for spending the afternoon with me :) I love your enthusiasm and I am soooo proud of each one of you. I expect GREAT things and I look forward to watching as each of you fulfill your life "platforms"!

Your People's Choice Delegate

The National competition is rapidly approaching (Aug. 4-9) and the ballots are officially open for the Miss Black USA People's Choice delegate! I would like to take an opportunity to thank everyone for their love and support over the past year. Your encouragement has been overwhelming and I already feel like your People's Choice!

As a result, I want us to continue our efforts to make every child aware of just how special he/she is! So, let's start a movement: Instead of spending $1 to help me earn an award, I would like everyone to use that $1 to take one of the favorite young people in your life out for an ice cream cone! While on your ice cream date, be sure to ask about what is going on in that young person's life, tell him/her that they are unique--with gifts and talents, and tell him/her that they are YOUR People's Choice! Introducing your graduating class of 2010!!

If life has taught me one thing, it is that each of us are on our own journey, with our unique purpose. Each of the distinguished graduates represented different walks of life that met at a point of resolve: a commitment to face challenges head on and complete their high school diploma. I would especially like congratulate the class valedictorian Tiffani Gunner (pictured) on her outstanding achievement--continue striving for excellence (and of course consider Drexel Univ. for your next step!)

Our commencement speaker for the evening was the one and only, activist and writer extraordinare Sonia Sanchez (pictured)! Her creative energy and enthusiasm were the perfect catalyst to the conferral of diplomas.

An emphasis on education ( in any form) is a major part of my platform because it affords one the ability to view and interact with the world around you in ways previously unimaginable. Thus it is a critical component of restoring our communities. Kudos and kudos again to all of the graduates---this is only the beginning!

June 17, 2010: Brides Against Breast Cancer

Every 2 1/2 minutes a person in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer. It is estimated that this year alone, over 200,000 women and nearly 1,200 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer; with 40,000 people in the United States losing their battle with the disease annually.

Brides Against Breast Cancer (BABC) is a heart-warming organization that provides an opportunity for metastatic breast cancer patients' dream or wish to be fulfilled by providing special time of "Making Memories" together with their families. BABC receives donations of gently used weddings gowns from individuals and designers like Vera Wang, Priscilla of Boston, Monique Lulillier, and David's Bridal, and offer them to soon-to-be brides at heavily discounted prices (I sold a gorgeous Vera Wang gown for $600!!!). ALL (yes, 100%) of the proceeds go towards making dreams come true for breast cancer patients---some simply want a new washer and dryer to teach their children how to do laundry, while others wish for a last family vacation to Disney.

Having known many breast cancer survivors, it was an honor and a privilege to help women find their wedding dress--arguably the most important part of their wedding day (besides the groom), while simultaneously fundraising for an excellent cause! I highly encourage you to find when the Brides Against Breast Cancer tour comes to your town and VOLUNTEER!! You will not regret it :)

June 9, 2010: Awareness and Self Defense Program for Women

On Tuesday, June 1, 2010, 20 year old Sabrina Rose O'Donnell was sexually assaulted and murdered in the northern section Philadelphia. This tragic loss left a family devastated and a neighborhood stunned and angry. While the suspect has since been apprehended, the brutal murder understandably resonates uneasy feelings in the hearts of women everywhere. In response, Master Lawrence Whitaker at the Urban Defense Center hosted a Self Defense course to teach basic readiness assurance techniques to use in emergent situations. In addition to the physical moves, Master Whitaker also discussed the importance if intuition and making smart decisions when moving about in public. We must EDUCATE ourselves to PROTECT ourselves!

A few take home points:

1. Ladies: Arrive together, leave together

2. Always be aware of your surroundings

3. Do not ignore your "spidey-sense" --if it is tingling, something is probably wrong!

4. Do not worry about "offending" a potential attacker--anyone who does not mean you harm will understand and not be offended

June 6: 2010 (Evening): Samuel Dalembert Foundation Fundraiser

I had the lovely opportunity to attend the Our ModestE fashion show and fundraiser event to bring resources and awareness to the Samuel Dalembert Foundation and St. Christopher's Hospital. The Samuel Dalembert Foundation strives to "better the lives of Haiti and children around the world", before and during this time of recovery. St. Christopher is a true oasis in an urban jungle that provides exceptional pediatric care to children from around the world and strives to maintain the values of "integrity, sensitivity, fairness and justice".

The occasion was a huge success, attended by a wide variety of local radio/television personalities (Natasha Brown, CBS3 pictured above) and was unique in that it represented how people of all backgrounds can congregate for the purpose of social improvement. If we are honestly going to "restore the vision for our communities" we must realize a few things: 1. Charity begins at home, but it does not end there, 2. If we are ever going to have a sustained upward progression , we MUST provide support and resources to our children!

June 6, 2010: Walk through a Wall for Girard

Integrity, respect, self-discipline, compassion and responsibilty; these are the values emphasized at the Girard College. The Walk Through A Wall for Girard walk-a-thon to empower the children of lower income families throughout Philadelphia.

Girard College is a private boarding school for academically capable students grade K-12 from families with limited financial resources, headed by a single guardian. All Girard students receive full scholarships to take part in the accademic program and to live safely on its enclosed 43-acre campus in Philadelphia. Unfortunatley, due to the economic downturn, many of these scholarships are at risk--thus why we gave all that we could to make this fundraiser a hige success!

Girard's mission is to prepare students for advanced education and life as informed, ethical and productive citizens through a rigorous educational programs that promote intellectual, social and emotional growth. I believe that it is instituions like Girard College that are integral in "restoring the vision for our communities" and embodies the principles of EDUCATION, COMMUNITY SERVICE, PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY and SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY--the nucleas of my year of service!

I had a phenomenal time walking alongside Girard's rising senior class (woop woop!) and discussing options and game plans for pursuing higher education. In our group we had future alumni of Howard University, LaSalle, FAM Univ., Millersville and DREXEL UNIVERSITY (home of the fierce Drexel Dragons--woop woop!), but I am not biased **wink wink** Thank you Girard for allowing me to be a part of this worthy cause!

June 3, 2010: Visiting the Keystone State Capital, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

Harrisburg, the illustrious capital city of the historic Keystone State of Pennsylvania: My visit to Harrisburg was exciting, purpose confirming and awe-inspiring to say the least! It began with an impromptu tour of the downtown area (looking for parking- LOL) and then a leisurely breakfast on restaurant row. Upon entering the Office of Mayor Linda D. Thompson (the first African American and first female Mayor of Harrisburg--EVER) I was immediately greeted by her incredibly pleasant office team. As we walked into the conference room for our meeting my eyes locked onto the basket full of Hershey chocolate bars occupying the entire center of the table and I thought to myself: this is a woman after my own heart! :)

The incredible conversation that ensued when the Mayor sat down can only be described ordained! Mayor Thompson is a rare combination of elegance, intelligence, tenacity, beauty-and did I mention intelligence-all with the knowledge of Christ. Our discussion reafffirmed the importance of obedience and joy of faith! At the culmination of our meeting the Mayor presented me with a prepared proclamation declaring June 3, 2010, Valerie L. Moore, Miss Black Pennsylvania USA 2010 Day!! The document highlights my personal accomplishments as well as the triumphs of the Miss Black USA organization. To say I am feel blessed to have received this honor would be an understatement--I am still staring at it in amazement :)

Harrisburg is a charming city that offers small town luxuries with a big city feel. The views of the Susquehanna River are breathtaking, the citizens are warm and the Turkey Hill ice cream is unbelieveable!

June 2, 2010: Webster Elementary School Take 25/Peace Week

H.A.L.T ! A command to ward off offenders? Nope- its an acronym to assess your immediate feelings. We learned that before we act on our emotions, we are going to step back, take a 10 second timeout and ask ourselves if we are Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired--it is amazing what a little nap can do! This is critical because although we may choose our actions we cannot choose the consequences. Also during my time hanging with my new friends at Webster Elementary School, my sisters and I discussed a wide variety of topics ranging from emotions to understanding boys/brothers (boys are weird) to our topic du jour Internet Safety. In today's "connected" society our youth are gaining increased exposure to a wide variety of influences, thus it is important that they are educated about social skills on and offline. Research shows that less than 30% of childrfen who receive unwanted sexual advances online report it to a parent or guardian--the threat is unfortunate, but very real! Spending time with young girls is always the highlight of my school visits--I started off with no sisters, now I have over 100!! :)

May 25, 2010: Take 25 National Missing and Exploited Children Awareness Day Child Self Defense Class

Each year, an estimated 800,000 children are reported missing--more than 2,000 a day. Of that number 115 children are the victims of the most serius abductions; they are taken by non-family members and either murdered, ransomed or taken with the intent to keep. Recent studies regarding attempted abduction cases have found that in 84% of the cases, the child escaped would-be abductors through their own actions. teaching children about saftey works--it saves lives!

On Tuesday, May 25, 2010 I partnered with the National Center for Missing and Expolited Children Take 25 campaign and the Urban Defense Center (http://www.phillyurbandefense.com/) to teach students ages 5-13 self defense techniques to utilize in the prevention and response to emergency situations. Master Whitaker offered specific advice for staying safe in urban/highly populated areas, and provided information useful for people of all ages. It was empowering learning how to protect myself and the enthusiasm of both Master Whitaker and the students was refreshing :)

I encourage all parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles to take 25 minutes out of their day to discuss safety procedures with the children in their lives--it is a few moments that could make all of the difference!

May 21, 2010: 2010 Career Day at Martha Washington School

Education = Options and Opportunities! This was the concept that I discussed with the students at Martha Washington School in Philadelphia, grades K-8. I was able to share my personal experiences about the benefits of an active education and aimed to nurture a fire for learning. At one point I even found myself teaching first grade students Japanese :) Speaking to students is truly one of my favorite aspects of being a role model. Young people are inquisitive, energetic and so full of potential--it always reminds me that the best is still yet to come in our society!

Kudos to Ms. Jones and her committee for putting together such a phenomenal program. To my Martha Washington students: I LOVE YOU ALL and I EXPECT GREAT THINGS FROM EACH OF YOU! :)

This powerful, pictorial collaboration of Pennsylvania's 50 most influential women in the fields of medicine, education, legislature, business, arts, technology and non-profit arena, examines what it takes to excel in today's society. The stories are inspirational and "real"--they are not sugar coated depictions of success, but authentic reflections about the triumph and pitfalls in the journey to excellence.

As Miss Black Pennsylvania USA there are stereotypes that I must struggle against each day; prejudices towards women, minorites, students, twenty-somethings and beauty queens. I have worked extremely hard to achieve the positions that I have attained and I continue to strive daily to maintain the high standards I have set for myself. Taking part in this celebration of "Minority Womanhood" further emboldens me to continue the pursuit of my endeavors-- and who knows, maybe oneday I will be celebrated for my perseverence, as these women so eloquently were!

May 12, 2010: One Million Mentor Tour with Michael Baisden

Anyone close to me can attest that I have been a long-time advocate for mentorship. It exposes young people to the reality that they have professional options and that they are not isolated in their life experiences. Often times it is tempting to assume that when we are faced with difficult situation in life, we are the ONLY ones who are experiencing such issues and that NO ONE could possibly understand how we feel. What mentorship affords is the ability to develop lasting, influential relationships with persons who are committed to providing a listening ear, words of wisdom and the benefits of experience. It teaches our youth that they are NOT alone in their circumstance and that they are worthy of someone's time and effort.

Having said that, I was very excited to join radio/television personality Michael Baisden, as he made his stop in Philadelphia during his One Million Mentor Tour! The crowd was enthusiastic,the panelists were engaging and informative, and many mentorship opportunities were made available to parents and neighborhood locals. All participants appeared invigorated by the seminar and I can only hope that the parental involvement will continue long after the Tour is over!

May 5, 2010: Official White House Tour!

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue--arguably one of the most famous addresses in the world--and I was there! Having an opportunity to tour the home of the President of the United States as a representative of Pennsylvania was a truly humbling experience. The history and attention to detail in the over 100 rooms was awe-inspiring and it was incredible to think that I was walking through rooms that had been the epicenter of some of the world's most influential political moments. The experience was only heightened by the fact that I was able to share the experience with my mom :)

My only regret is that we were not able to take photos of the inside residence (even my crown was a potential security risk), but I can certainly unnderstand and respect the immense need to protect the safety of this national treasure.

Overall, I had a phenomenal experience in the Nation's Capital and it was a lot of fun feeling the enthusiasm of the local residents an tourists--I even signed my first arm autograph (congrats again Marvin on your expanding family!)

April 24, 2010: Walk A Mile in Her Shoes

Every 2 minutes, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaluted

1 out of 6 women in the U.S. will be sexually assaulted at some time in her life

College aged women are 4 TIMES more likely to
be sexually assaulted

These shocking statistics are an unfortunate reality about the prevelance of sexualized violence against women. The "Walk A Mile in Her Shoes" campaign seeks to bring awareness and discussions to such atrocities in an event that is as comical as it is poignant. During the one mile walk-a-thon, male graduate and medical students marched through West Philadelphia in pink and red women's pump to show their support for this notable cause. With all of the hysteria created with seeing adult men in heels, baggy jeans rolled to the knee and gym shorts, it is ultimately our hope that we opened the lines of communication for assault survivors and given a voice to those who have lost their life at the hand of an abuser.

The National Alumnae Association of Spelman College hosted the first annual "Uniquely You" summit for over 450 girls in the Delaware Valley and Philadelphia area. Over the course of the weekend-long conference the participants were able to receive valuable insights into developing self- esteem and self-worth, education, relationships, achieving full potential and beauty/health/wellness.

As a panelist, I fielded questions from the young women and offered words of wisdom from my personal experiences and professional background. In addition to the lovely ladies from Spelman, the program was facilitated by Philadelphia's first lady Lisa Nutter, Pennsylvania Senator Vincent Hughes-pictured, Tina Wells, DJ Beverly Bond, DJ Deja Vu (from NYC 105.9), the one and only Sheryl Lee Ralph-Hughes -pictured- and the multi-talented Pauletta Washington-pictured- (acclaimed pianist and co-founder of the Pauletta and Denzel Washington Family Gifted Scholarship Fund). I had so much fun with all of my Queens In Training and DIVAs, and I hope you all benefitted as much as I did!

Young girls are our most precious resource and we must protect them at all cost!

The sun on your face, a light wind on your back, snacks, coffee and water: The perfect ingredients for an old-fashioned, early Saturday morning clean-up! Myself, along with the Wissahickon Civic Association cleaned up a neighborhood park in Philadelphia. We swept up debri, blew leaves, whacked weeds, sanitized playground equipment, painted fences and brainstormed fundraising ideas for the newly planned community recreation area--and all before 11:00am! **Whew** I enjoyed working alongside Philadelphians in the spirit of CIVIL SERVICE to help make this city the great place we know if can be! I encourage each of you to go through your community, or that of a loved one and figured out how you can lend a helping hand to help "restore the vision for our communities".

Thank you Principal Wade for the distinct pleasure of spending the morning and early afternoon with 11th/12th grade students at the Philadelphia Military Academy. Each time I speak with high school aged students, I am reminded of just how crucial mentorship is. These students are intelligent, vocal and personable, filled with gifts and talents! But without leadership and support, these attributes could all go to waste. It is our SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY to teach our youth about the importance of pursuing an EDUCATION and taking ACCOUNTABILITY for their actions. Decisions can be life-changing and the consequences long-lasting! To all of the students who rotated through Ms. Jenkins' class, I remember each of you, I am rooting for you and I am expecting great things--EXCELLENT things! Especially from you Miss Lucretia ;-)

Born February 27, 1897, Marian Anderson encountered many challenges including poverty and denial to music schools due to her ethnicity, but surpassed them all to become a pioneer and the most celebrated contralto of the 20th century. She performed in operas around the world,was awarded several presidential recognitions, and was known as much for her commitment to help others as her trememdous artistic ability. As a result of her talent and extraordinary career, our broader culture has been immeasurably improved, and it is in the spirit of this unparallelled artist from Philadelphia that the Marian Anderfson Award was conferred. Founded in 1998, the Marian Anderson Award has been bestowed upon individuals who have used their talents for personal artistic expression coupled with a deep commitment to the betterment of society.*This year's recipient of the Marian Anderson Award was none other than the venerable Bill Cosby (or Heathcliff Huxtable as many of us know him!). Mr. Cosby broke television's racial barrier with a role in I Spy, becoming the first African American to co-star on a television series and win three consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a dramatic series. He continued on to contribute immeasurably to the fields of television, stage, music and education. I have long believed that arts education is a crucial part of the development of our youth. It teaches focus, commitment and creativity, all the while offering alternative means of communicating ones thoughts and emotions.

This ceremony proved to be quite the celebration with performances by the Philadelphia Orchestra; the stunning, highly acclaimed African American mezzo-soprano, Denyce Graves; the mesmerizing jazz vocalist Lizz Wright; the hilarious comedian and fellow Philadelphia native Dave Brenner; pianist Yang Bao; and -wait for it- Boyz II Men!! It was almost too much to take in--LOL! I was just getting over hearing Ms. Graves and Ms. Wright (both of whom I have followed for years) and then out walks Boyz II Men.... what an ensemble! Throughout the evenings festivities I found myself looking around and realizing how blessed I was to be able to take part in such an honorable event, in memory of a strong African American woman, celebrating an African American pioneer in the entertainment industry, as a representative of the State of Pennsylvania!

March 27 (Afternoon), 2010: Rising Stars Celebration and Fashion Show

Models, designers, seamstresses and intellectuals. And did I mention under the age of 16?! These ambitious girls took part in the Rising Stars Mentorship program. In this program, they learned the necessary skills to develop into strong, classy young women, focused on their goals and not afraid to say NO to negative situations. I was blown away when I saw each young woman glide across the runway and then I learned that the pieces they were modeling were designed, sketched and sewn by each model! Some of the girls were even awarded scholarships to the MOORE Institute of Design--talk about off to a great start! (Maybe they can design my pageant gown...hmmmm...) As a keynote speaker, I was excited to see emphasis on EDUCATION and PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY with students of such an early point in their lives. We must start instilling confidence in our girls from infancy and I was encouraged to witness the overwhelming amount of support these young women received from the mothers, fathers, grandmothers and extended friends and family.

It may take more than my year of service to "Restore the vision for our communities" and it truly takes a village to raise a child, but we can do it! It starts with one young woman, one person with a vision, one mentor, the commitment of one day a week, the faith of one mustard seed.... Let the restoration begin!

March 27, 2010 (Morning/Afternoon): B.E.T Women's Health Symposium

I had the privilege of partnering with the B.E.T Foundation, the Association of Black Cardiologists and General Mills at the B.E.T. Annual Women's Health Symposium! This program encompassed every aspect of women's wellness, including physical fitness, beauty and hygiene, mental/emotional health, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS awareness and , of course, HEART HEALTH! As participants visited my station they were able to learn about the Miss Black USA organization, my platform during my year of service and the Heart Truth campaign. I distributed fact sheets, resource information and delicious recipe options to help kick start a healthier lifestyle!

As the symposium progressed I had the opportunity to visit some of the other stations to show my supprt for each presenter's contribution to improving women's health. Amid my "travels" I popped backstage to participate in the much anticipated fashion show. The models were gorgeous young women who I thoroughly enjoyed working with. I even had a chance to meet our fashion show Mistress of Ceremony, Bern Nadette Stanis (pictured above)--yes!- you guessed it, the multitalented actress who play the unforgettable "Thelma" on the sitcom Good Times! She was as pleasant and beautiful in person as I imagined!

Overall, I was extremely impressed with the organization of the Health Symposium and I was pleased to be able to educate so many women (and the men who love them) about the importance of recognizing risks and taking the proper steps to prevent Heart Disease. Heart health is of personal importance to me and I am pleased to be an ambassador for such a worthy cause!

March 26, 2010: The Spirit of Heart Community Leaders Forum

The Association of Black Cardiologists (http://www.abcardio.org/), AstaZeneca and the B.E.T. Foundation hosted the 2010 Spirit of the Heart Community Leaders Forum to discuss the impact that Heart Disease has had on the African American community. Heart Disease is the predominate killer of Americans, with one in four women succumbing to the disease. As a spokesperson for the Heart Truth campaign I felt that it was important that I take part in this discussion, especially considering that African American and Latina women are disproportionately affected.

As I listened to the presentations and took a moment to peer around the room, I realized that I was in the presence of some of the most incredible and influential minorities in the country! These were African Americans who despite all odds, persevered to become superiors in their respective fields. The honorable Judge Mablean Ephriam (pictured above in pink) was even in attendance to offer her support and characteristic energy.To say that I was inspired would be an understatement! I literally got goosebumps listening to each of their experiences and admiring their humility. I am excited to know that I have partners in the healthcare industry to join our fight against Heart Disease!!

March 20, 2010: Where Style Meets Status Haitian Relief Fundraiser

Our ModestE, a chic women's clothing and accessory boutique presented this charity style auction and reception in conjunction with We Need Peace and Love and Philadelphia Status. The event featured a high end fashion show with the hottest new designers, live music and incredible food, all arranged by S and B Event Concepts. Proceeds generated from the auction were donated directly to the Samuel Dalembert Foundation for Haitian Relief. Mr. Dalembert was on hand for the event and I thoroughly enjoyed our long conversation about my Haiti experiences and life in general! I look forward to nurturing our relationship with the Dalembert Foundation and my continued prayers are with the families affected by the devastating earthquake.

Also in attendance at the Black Tie event was the always dapper, celebrity Chef Smiley and the lovely ladies of the Totally Posh Boutique (all pictured above)!

And the award goes to... The Student National Medical Association is a student-run organization that addresses the needs of and provides support to medical students of color. On this particular evening I was nominated and awarded the delegation of Biomedical Sciences Student of the Year! This is extremely important to me because this is an award that is voted on by my peers and demonstrates their belief that I was a significant contribution to our organization. My SNMA family has been continually supportive of my title as Miss Black Pennsylvania USA and I hope to represent them well across our State! I love you guys :-) **tear**

March 5, 2010 (Afternoon): Women of Moxie Luncheon and Seminar

This was the perfect way to end an incredible celebration of Moxie Women! Attendees were treated to motivational dialogue from some of the most influential women in Philadelphia including: Councilwman Blondell Reynolds Brown, radio personality Dyana Williams, PECO Executive Mellanie Lassiter, President of American Cities Foundation Sandra Dungee-Glenn and President/CEO of United Way Southestern Pa, Jill Michal. Luncheon attendees also had an opportunity to support the Love Yourself campaign, a campaign started by Radio Personality MoShay LaRen that is dedicated to healing and rescuing victims of domestic violence. This initiative was supported by poetry from incredible young people, some of whom had direct experience with abuse, and a musical performance by artist Claudette Ortiz (pictured above) formally of the singing trio "City High". Being a part of this event, especially during Women's History Month, reminded me of just how integral women are in the progression of society. Let's support and encourage the young women in our lives--the future of our Nation depends upon it!

March 5, 2010 (Morning): Samuel Gompers Celebration of Black History Month and Women History Month

Energetic, curious, bold and did I mention energetic?! The students at Samuel Gompers Elementary School are by far one of my favorite groups of students! During this particular visit I joined the students and faculty at the Black History Month Closing Ceremony (previously scheduled assemblies had to be rescheduled due to snow). There was singing, poetry reading, and trivia as the students discussed all of the contributions African Americans have made in world history. The students sang Lift Every Voice soooo robustly, it could be heard all the way down the hall and out onto the side walk! I was so proud :-) When it was my opportunity to speak, I discussed additional African American women who have made remarkable contributions to humanity to celebrate both Black History and Women's History month. I shared my personal story of difficulties growing up and encouraged the students to always strive for excellence!! I learn so much each time I talk with the students -- they are invigorating and remind me of the importance of supporting our next generation of leaders!

MOXIE: The ability to face difficulty with spirit and courage;verve, fortitude, determination. The women honored at this ceremony and reception were from all walks of life, each with her own story of hark work and triumph. They each embodied the idea of MOXIE! The positive energy was palpable in the Conversation Room of City Hall as Councilwomen Blondell Reynolds Brown (pictured) offered the biographies of each of the honorees. It was surreal to be in the company of members of the Philadelphia City Council, Pennsylvania State delgates, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, judges, television/radio personalities, corporate CEOs and countless other incredible rising stars! March 1, 2010: Valerie Goes to City Hall (Again)

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting with the office of Councilman Curtis Jones, Jr. --It is always great to finally be able to put a name with a face! During my 3 hour long meeting we discussed the importance of community involvement and education, how to improve the compliance for the 2010 Census, Councilman Jones' future initiaitves for his district and we even networked resources to show our support for families devastated by the earthquake in Haiti. As you can see they managed to put me to work while I was there :-) I had enjoyed speaking openly with the councilman's staff and left feeling confirmed in God's call on my life. While at City Hall, I met with the office of Councilwoman B. Reynolds Brown, the only female African American At-Large delegate, and the office of Maria Quinones-Sanchez, the only Latina member of City Council!! WOW--and all in one afternoon!

I had the distinct pleasure of being on hand for the official "Rebirth" of the Philadelphia African American Chamber of Commerce! On hand for the celebration was the newly appointed chairman of the board Sulaiman Rahman, as well as, the other members of his energetic board. Mayor Nutter even joined the celebration by offering his words of support and encouragement for the mission of the AACC. I was able to meet incredible professionals and was so busy networking that I forgot to take photos :-( Other people were snapping shots so I am sure photos are floating around somewhere--stay tuned!

February 13, 2010 (Evening): The Vagina Monologues

The Vagina Monologue is a powerful dialogue about the devastation caused by rape, incest, battery, genital mutilation and sexual slavery. It is a movement that seeks to educate and empower its listeners through creative references to a certain part of the female anatomy....

As I watched each monologue, I began to notice that I was not only entertained, but educated about secret lives and atrocities I had once been unaware of. If ever given the opportunity to attend this show--I highly recommend it!

February 13, 2010 (Day): The Franklin Institute and Women's Heart Health Awareness

The Pennsylvania Mainline Health Partners Joined the awarenss campaign for Women and Heart Disease! Philadelphia's famed Franklin Institute served as the venue for families to meet with health professionals and receive resources on how to live the heart healthiest life possible. Intertwined with all of the professional resources, participants were able to "Go Vogue" for heart health by posing for fun photographs in boas, glasses, hats, wigs and even lights! Courageous women had the opportunity to share their personal battles with Heart diease, ranging from personal survival stories to experiences with loved ones. I was even able to share my personal connection to heart disease, having lost my grandmother to the disease.

The days festivities culminated with my helping to crown the 2010 "Queen of Hearts". The Queen of Hearts is selected from a group of women who have each been impacted by heart disease in one way or another. After crowning the "Queen" I went on a walking tour through a gigantic replica of the human heart--neat-o!!

January 29-31, 2010: LadyDiva Conference produced by Shayna Rudd, Miss Black USA 2009!

"The mission of the LadyDiva Corp is to Cultivate, encourage and Empower young women from low- income areas to relentlessly pursue their God-given purpose in oeder the break the cycles of negativity that surrounds them". This goal was exemplified in every aspect of this seminar series! On each of the three days the young ladies and mentors were ministered to by women from all walks of life, each with a powerful testimony of strength and courage. It was imperative that the young ladies felt "safe and comfortable" in this female only environment and no topic was deemed as off-limits. We discussed self-esteem, education, abuse and sisterhood during this incredible GIRL-POWERED event. One of the most poignant parts of the series was the one time in which males were permitted to particpate. It was an all-male panel ranging in ages from 15-70s, that volunteered to give a "man's perspective" in answering questions from the young ladies, many of whom did not have postive male figures in their lives. The end of the second day culminated in the "Pearl Ceremony" during which time mentors placed a string of pearls around each young woman's neck and reminded her to not "cast her pearls among swine" (Matt 7:6) as she continues through her life's journey. At the following Sunday service, the new, transformed young women were presented to the church congregation in a moving display of unity.

This seminar was established to help grow girls into young women of God, but I can comfortably speak for everyone when I say that ALL of our lives were changed and we ALL left stronger women of God!

February 8, 2010: Black History Month Celebration

"Remembering our Legacy and Celebrating Humanity: Stepping Outside of the Box to make a Change" I had the pleasure of being a part of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine Black History Month Opening Ceremony! During the program we were greeted by PCOM CEO and President, Matthew Shure, PhD.,(pictured) and representatives from the Office of Student Affairs and the Student National Medical Association (pictured). One SNMA member, David Pierre shared the personal account of his family in Haiti during the devastating earthquake and its aftermath. It was a moving tribute to the strength and courage of our Haitian brothers and sisters, that exemplified the need for continued Haitian support. My keynote address focused on the importance of observing the contributions of African Americans in American and world history. When the foundations were set in 1926 by Dr. Carter Woodson, for what we now recognize as Black History Month, it was out of frustration about the incomplete recounts of Africans in American History. Woodson believe that "We should emphasize not Negro History, but the Negro in history." To rephrase it, rather than focusing on a few men significant in the advancement of African Americans we should focus onthe countless Black men and women who had contributed to the advancement of human civilization. Contrary to what is still all too often taught, African history in America did not begin with slavery! Let's accept the charge to educate ourselves and someone else on what it TRULY means to celebrate cultural diversity!

February 3, 2010: One Book, One Philadelphia

SUDDEN! Stories: The One Book, One Philadelphia program strives to promote literacy and reading, while unifying the city through literature. The current selection is called The Complete Persepolis, and it is the author's account of coming of age in Iran among polital revolution and social turmoil. The Sudden Stories series discusses the reading selection and guides the participants through the process of creating their own stories--with one huge twist: the entire story can only be 10-15 sentences long! **Phew** The instructor asked us 10 (seemingly unrelated) questions that we had to answer--and the answers were melded together to become our story :-) My "SUDDEN Story" was as follows:

I spent my last vacation in the mountainous town of Neiba near the Dominican Republic/Haitian border. And when I got there, Lynnette told me that she needed me to babysit for her tomorrow afternoon. I was wearing a green and tan halter top, with denim shorts. It was the perfect summer outfit-fun, feminine and breezy. I can vividly recall buying the blouse at Melinda's House of Fashion when I worked there after my Freshmen year at Drexel University. "Are you comfortable watching the twins by yourself?", Lynnette asked me. It is supposed to snow again this weekend. I wonder if he knows what he is doing in the kitchen. I feel like I should offer my assistance with either putting the fire out or being the designated taster. The smoke alarm starts to blare. I open the window, pull the small oscillating fan from the closet and set it up near the window. I take the dish towel and begin the fan the smoke alarm. The smoke alarm stopped.

Are you confused yet? LOL! It needs some tweaking but I think it was a great start! Miriam Kotzin (pictured) was one of my favorite professors at Drexel University and served as a catalyst for my writing development. I was overjoyed that she was able to join us for this event!!

January 27, 2010: Do You Control Your Emotions or Do Your Emotions Control You?

The importance Personal Accountability is a strong component of my platform for this year of service. During this particular outreach, I spoke with 7th Graders at Martha Washington Middle School about self esteem, depression, and anger management. The workshop focused on: Undestanding one's emotions, the importance of making wise decisions and taking responsiblity for the consequences of bad decisions. It was interesting to realize that the pressures and rationale of teenagers have not changed much since I was their age (except FB of course!). I truly enjoyed talking with the students and I look forward to returning there in the near future!

January 7, 2010: Happy New Year--Let's Eat Cake! :-)

Working in conjunction with the incredible members of the Student National Medical Association (and its supporters), I hosted a hugely successful red themed Heart Truth Bake Sale! This was our way of welcoming in the new year and reminding/prepping the students and faculty at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine for February as National Heart Health Month. We had delicious cookies, cakes, brownies, muffins, cupcakes, pies, tarts, torts--did I mention cookies?! As we filled bellies with yummy treats, we filled minds with the Heart Truth! We handed out heart health information and health related facts on how to achieve a healthy lifestyle. Tip #1: Instead of eating all three cookies you purchased at a bake sale, share them with two friends!

Official Miss Black USA Red Dress Photoshoot and Weekend Extravaganza

The Red Dress Photoshoot was my first "official" pageant sponsored event!! I had an opportunity to meet and hang out with some of the phenomenal young women representing states all over the country. Can you find me? I am the "Lady in Winter White"-LOL :-) During this weekend, we also received critical information on maximizing our year of service and met representatives from the Heart Truth campaign. Some of my other favorite memories include meeting our little Miss Black Princess Taylor Vann Hunt, going out for a night on the town with my new friends, Miss Black Michigan, New Jersey, and Indiana USA, and showing our support for Haitian relief efforts at a fundraising shin-dig at Policy Lounge (See photos below). Somewhere in there we even found time to have a day long Red Dress Photoshoot!-- Whew-- I am exhausted just thinking about it !!! This was an AWESOME weekend that I am grateful to have participated in! I met new people (which is always fun!), stayed in a great hotel, educated myself on the Heart Truth, took gorgeous photos and enjoyed our Nation's capital!! And just think: this was all after I had a huge exam in Forensic Medicine--What a weekend ! :-)

Dec 2, 2009: Meeting Mayor Michael Nutter!

One of the most exciting components of being a State delegate, is having opportunity to meet people who are actively working towards my platform vision to "Restore the vision for our communities". Some visionaries effect change through policies and other through challenging social views of beauty.

This photo is from the 2009 Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony. The Christmas Season , is one of my favorite times of the year, so I was estatic to be on hand for the ceremony. Mayor Michael Nutter (photographed above) has been a true pioneer in "restoring" Philadelphia and I was honored to be in attendance at this annual event!

Dec 22, 2009: Minnie Mouse!!!!!

This was truly one of the highlights of my Year of Service! I had an opportunity to meet Minnie Mouse, Princess Tiana and 30 "Princesses-in- Training"!!! During this collaborative event with Feld Entertainment/Walt Disney/Miss Black Pennsylvania USA/Girls Inc. I spoke with 30 young women ages 8-12 about the importance of education and staying focused to achieve your dreams. As a part of the program, the girls were able to make their own foam tiaras and meet Princess Tiana (the first African-American Disney Princess), myself (a "real-life" princess) and Minnie Mouse (the queen of "Girl power"!). When Minnie walked in I was so excited I thought I was going to pass out and I definitly had to fight the urge to run over and tackle her with a bear hug :-) All in all, it was an incredible experience and I even gave out my first "official" autographs, signing the tiaras the young women had constructed earlier!! **tear**

Hello All!

It is time to get everyone caught up on what I have been doing during the past 4 months! Warning: This is going to be a loooooong post, but I promise to update my blog more regularly in the future :-) Let's see....where do I begin..... I guess at the BEGINNING! LOL

October 5, 2009:

Julie Chavez Rodriguez, an acclaimed activist and granddaughter of Cesar Chavez, traveled to Drexel University to discuss her grandfather's legacy, civic engagement and what college students can do to make an impact intheir local communities. In one word: Inspiring!

October 10, 2009 : Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine Day of Service

This was my first service project as Miss Black Pennsylvania USA!!!! I had the pleasure of helping the PCOM family organize its inaugural school-wide day of service! As one of the "day of" coordinators I worked with the faculty and students of Samuel Gompers Elementary and our PCOM students to paint doors, classroom walls, and hallway trim, weed the landscape, plant trees and clear out storage closets. I commend Caitlyn and all of the other PCOM and Gompers students who put their blood (yikes) and sweat into making this project a success!
